Tories support Labour in Doncaster

All the chairs and Vice-Chair positions for the 2006/7 year have been divided between Labour the Tories and the Community Group. Also, it is down to the Tories and the Community Group that Mayor Winter was able to retain his position. This is the price the Liberal Democrats and the Independent Group were prepared to pay if we failed to bring back democracy to our town.
This power-game action was expected by the Tories who used their balance of power last year to gain more than their fair share of positions when negotiating with the opposition groups. Certain agreements could have been to the benefit of the Borough had they remained onside against Labour, but time after time they used their position in support of Labour. The underhanded actions of the Community Group highlighted the total self-interest in power of their leader, Martin Williams, who, originally, was firmly supportive in the Lib Dem idea to stand one candidate against Mayor Winter in order to remove him and the undemocratic system we have in Doncaster.

If in future, if you are thinking of voting Conservative in Doncaster, remember its only the Lib Dems who oppose Labour round here

AXE THE TAX

COUNCIL TAX MUST GO !!

The Council Tax is unfair because it is not related to the ability to pay. Pensioners have been hit particularly hard under Labour as the council tax has risen far faster than pensions.

Council tax is expensive to operate compared to income tax. It costs almost four times to collect the same amount.

Some people claim that a local income tax would be unfair. If they really believe that, they should propose replacing our existing national income tax. That takes far more out of our pockets to pay for central government than would be taken to pay for local government.

We are convinced that local income tax would be much fairer and everyone would benefit from having a system which is much cheaper to administer. But, when we raised it in a council meeting, Labour and Conservative councillors supported the discredited council tax.

Pensioners in Poverty

The Labour Government has again announced a pay out to pensioners, but only those over 70 and only for one year. Is this another admission that the present system is failing the people who need it most.

Surely the 60 to 70 year old pensioners are just as needy. With an increase in Council Tax of 20% over the last two years, even with this payout, pensioners are still worse off with this unfair system.

The Liberal Democrats say pensioners will be better off under this new system of local income tax.

Recycling Failure

Doncaster is failing in its waste management strategy and can not meet its targets. Only 3.9% of its household waste has been recycled in the last year. If the authority is to meet the Governments Target of a 13.2% recycling rate by next year vast improvements need to be made.

Last year the Lib Dems Councillors asked the authority to introduce a borough wide “green box” recycling and a separate garden waste collection service. This was rejected by the ruling Labour Group, no wonder the Council is nowhere near meeting its targets.

Children's play areas

Small play areas are needed in various parts of the ward.

Karen says, “I feel strongly that safe small play areas should be provided in the vicinity of the housing needing them. Children should not have to cross busy, dangerous roads or be too far away from their neighbourhood”.
